The Lord Needs It

Apr 01, 2026 By Hephzibah Stephen

Bible Reading: Luke 19:28–35

When Jesus was about to enter Jerusalem, He instructed His disciples to bring a colt that had never been ridden. He told them, if anyone asks you, why you are untying it, say, “The Lord needs it” (Luke 19:31). At first glance, this seems surprising. The Lord who created the heavens and the earth, who owns the cattle on a thousand hills, is saying He “needs” a small donkey!

Why would the all-powerful God need anything from us?

The Bible reminds us that God is the owner of all creation. God lacks nothing. He does not need our possessions, abilities, or resources to accomplish His purposes.  Yet in His grace, God chooses to use what we offer to Him.

The colt in Luke 19 was ordinary and unnoticed until Jesus needed it. That simple animal became the means by which the King of kings entered Jerusalem in fulfilment of prophecy. It simply had to be available and surrendered.

What is the Lord teaching us today?

God often accomplishes His work through ordinary people like you and me and the simple resources placed at His disposal. The disciples were willing to obey Jesus’ instruction, and the colt's owner allowed it to be used. Because of their obedience and willingness, they became part of God’s redemptive story.

My friend, today the Lord is inviting us to place what we have into His hands—our time, talents, possessions, and lives. What may seem small or insignificant to us can become powerful when used for God’s purposes.  When we surrender what we have to the Lord, He can use it to accomplish far more than we ever imagined.  Like the colt, we may feel ordinary, but God delights in using humble instruments.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, everything I have comes from You, and I offer it back to You with a willing heart.  Use my life, my gifts, and my resources for Your purposes and for Your glory.

Help me to be humble and available whenever You say, “The Lord needs it.”  Amen
