Onesiphorus

Bible Reading: 2 Timothy 1:13- 18

Often in Scripture, our attention is drawn to great leaders such as Paul, Peter, and Moses. Yet, hidden within the pages of the Bible are lesser-known individuals whose quiet faithfulness speaks just as powerfully. These seemingly insignificant characters may appear only briefly, but their lives carry profound lessons for us today. One such person is Onesiphorus—a man mentioned only in passing by Paul in his second letter to Timothy, yet remembered for his loyalty, courage, and refreshing ministry. His story reminds us that in God’s kingdom, it is not prominence but faithfulness that truly matters.

When I read about Onesiphorus, what struck me was his commitment to look for Paul in the great city of Rome.  He is from Ephesus, and the Ephesian church must have heard that Paul had been imprisoned again in Rome.   So he had taken up the long journey to Rome and searched zealously for Paul among the many prisons, and found him! No wonder Paul blessed him, saying, “The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus” and “that he may find mercy from the Lord in that Day.”

Paul described many things that made Onesiphorus special.

He was a blessing to Paul, and he had refreshed the apostle who had done so much for other people.  Onesiphorus proved himself a true friend to Paul during his imprisonment.  He brought encouragement and strength to Paul during a very difficult time.  Onesiphorus was a different sort of man than Phygellus and Hermogenes, who had deserted Paul when the going got tough.

What can we learn from the life of Onesiphorus?   Onesiphorus means “help-bringer”, and he, no doubt, lived up to his name.

Ministry is not only preaching, teaching, or leading.  It is also refreshing others.  Showing acts of kindness, encouraging people amidst their struggles, not only with good counsel but also with practical support.  Sometimes, the greatest ministry is simply lifting a weary soul with love and concern. When Paul writes to Timothy about Onesiphorus, he says, “You know very well how many ways he ministered to me at Ephesus.” (2 Timothy 1:18).  His service was not a one-time act. It was his way of life, both in Ephesus and now in Rome. and

My friend, Paul, was imprisoned like a criminal. Many believers must have avoided him out of fear of Romans or embarrassment, but Onesiphorus did not.  True discipleship requires bold loyalty to Christ, even when it is costly or unpopular.  God wants us to be like Onesiphorus, one who stands, seeks, and strengthens those around us.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, help me to pursue others in love and serve consistently.  Help me to serve You without fear.  Amen.
