Broken, but Made Whole

Bible Reading:  Genesis 45:1-15

 

We live in a world of broken families.  Brothers and sisters stop speaking to one another.  Children distance themselves from the very parents who sacrificed their all to raise them.  Disputes over property, inheritance, misunderstandings, and wounded pride often create walls that seem impossible to break down.  When peace is absent in the home, which is the smallest unit of society, it is no surprise that there is no peace between communities and nations.

 

Jacob's family was deeply fractured by favoritism, jealousy, deception, and hatred.  Jacob favored Joseph, provoking envy among his brothers.  Their jealousy grew into hatred, and hatred led them to sell Joseph into slavery.  Years of separation, grief, and guilt followed.  From a human perspective, this family seemed beyond repair.

 

Yet God never abandoned them.

 

When Joseph was finally elevated next to the Pharaoh in Egypt, he had every opportunity to seek revenge.  Instead, he chose forgiveness.  Looking at his trembling brothers, he saw not merely the wrong they had done, but the sovereign hand of God at work through it all.  His remarkable words still echo through the centuries: "You meant evil against me; but God meant it for good" (Genesis 50:20).

 

Forgiveness did not erase the past, nor did it pretend that the pain was not significant.  Rather, it released Joseph from the prison of bitterness and opened the door for God to restore a broken family.  Jacob's family was made whole because one man chose grace over revenge.

 

Many families today carry wounds that have lasted for years.  Yet Joseph's story reminds us that no family is beyond God's redeeming power.  The God who healed Jacob's family can still heal ours and make it whole again. 

 

The question we have to answer today is: can you and I become the "Joseph" in our family?  Can you and I be the one who takes the first step in extending grace?

 

My friend, is there someone in your family whom you need to forgive, call and talk to today?  Ask God to give you Joseph's heart—a heart that chooses forgiveness, trusts God's sovereignty, and believes that God can make what is broken whole again.

 

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for being the God who restores broken lives and broken families.  Remove every root of bitterness from my heart.  Give me the grace to forgive as You have forgiven me.  May my family always be a testimony of Your redeeming love.  Amen.
