The Censuses

Oct 06, 2026 By Hephzibah Stephen

Bible Reading: 2 Samuel 24:1–10

The book of Numbers gets its name from the two great censuses recorded in it. The first census was taken near the beginning of Israel's journey, before they moved toward the Promised Land. The second was taken nearly forty years later, as a new generation stood ready to enter Canaan. The first generation that came out of Egypt had died in the wilderness because of their unbelief, and now a new generation was being prepared to possess the land God had promised.

There is something significant about counting before a battle. God Himself instructed Moses to number the men who were able to go to war.  Knowing who was available and organizing the people for the task ahead was sensible preparation. Jesus Himself taught about counting the cost: “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost?” (Luke 14:28).

There is nothing wrong with counting, planning, preparing, or assessing our resources. The danger comes when counting our resources becomes trusting in our resources!

This is what made David's census in 2 Samuel 24 so different. David numbered Israel, but the census was not simply an exercise in wise preparation. His heart had become proud. He wanted to know the strength of his kingdom. Instead of resting in the Lord who had given Israel victory, David began looking at the size of his army. Joab sensed the pride but he could not stop the king.  Later, David's heart condemned him and he realized his sin.

How easily we can fall into the same trap!

We count the money in the bank, our achievements, our education, our possessions, our connections, our abilities, and even the number of people following us on social media. Planning is wise, but when our confidence shifts from God to what we have, pride has entered.

The question we have to answer today is: When we count, where is our confidence?

We may carefully prepare for tomorrow, but our ultimate confidence must never be in our resources. Our strength comes from the Lord. The Bible says, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”(Psalm 20:7).  Our victory comes only from the Lord.

My friend, count the cost, prepare diligently, and use what God has given you wisely.  But never count on yourself. Before every task, battle, decision, and ministry, remember that victory does not ultimately come from our resources but from the God who provides them.

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, give us wisdom to plan and prepare, but guard our hearts from pride and self-reliance. May our confidence always rest in You alone. Amen.
