The Secret of a Fruitful Life
Bible Reading: John 15:5–11
When friends and acquaintances pass on to glory, we tend to think about them and the impact they made while they lived, and we say they lived a fruitful life. We tend to think about some others and say their lives were wasted. Not because they did not have any impact during their lifetimes, but because the impact was neither positive nor profitable to humanity!
What then, is the secret of a fruitful life?
One of the most beautiful invitations Jesus gives His followers is in John 15, “Abide in Me" (v. 5). The word ‘abide’ means to remain, stay, dwell, or continue in a close relationship. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit unless it remains connected to the vine, we cannot live a fruitful life unless we remain in Christ.
Jesus speaks of three aspects of abiding.
First, "Abide in Me" (v5). Our strength, wisdom, and spiritual life come from Him. When we rely on our own abilities, we become weak and fruitless. But when we depend on Christ daily, His life flows through us.
Second, "Abide in My words" (v7). God's Word nourishes our souls and guides our lives. As we read, meditate on, and obey Scripture, our minds are renewed, and our prayers align with God's will.
Third, "Abide in My love"(v9). Christ's love is not only something we receive; it is also something we are called to share. Jesus taught, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44). 1 John 4:20–21 reminds us that we cannot claim to love God while hating our brother or sister. Abiding in Christ's love means forgiving those who hurt us, blessing those who oppose us, and praying for those who wound us.
This kind of love is not natural; it is the fruit of a life connected to Christ.
As we abide in Him, His character is formed in us. We become more patient, more gracious, more compassionate and more Christlike.
My friend, the result of abiding in Christ and His words is a great blessing. Jesus promises that our joy may be full as His joy remains in us (v11). Today, let us remain close to Christ, dwell in His Word, and walk in His love. Then our lives will be fruitful, bearing fruit that glorifies God.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for inviting me to abide in You. Teach me to remain close to You each day through prayer, meditation , and obedience to Your Word. Fill my heart with Your love so that I may forgive those who have hurt me and bless those who oppose me. Help me to bear fruit that brings glory to Your name. Amen.
