The Little Foxes

Bible Reading: Song of Solomon 2:8-17

In ancient literature, wild animals were often used to represent problems that could separate lovers. Egyptian love songs used crocodiles to picture a threat to romantic love. In Israel, crocodiles were not common, but foxes were. Though foxes are carnivorous animals, they also devour plants. They dig holes in the vineyards and create gaps in the fences. They also bite the young shoots of the vines and eat the grapes!

The romance between the Shunamite and Solomon was blossoming, and no wonder Solomon did not want it to be spoiled, and so he said, "Catch us the foxes, the little foxes that spoil the vines, for our vines have tender grapes." The vineyards were in bloom; that is, their romance was alive and growing and preparing to bear fruit. Solomon compared their love to a vineyard in bloom and did not want the little foxes to spoil it! The foxes were "little," but even if the little things are overlooked, they often spoil things of value.

I don't know why no one preaches from this verse at weddings! In reality, it is the 'small' things that break marriages!

Lack of respect for the spouse, a lack of transparency, excessive ego, and a love of money are deal-breakers in a marriage relationship. Negative communication patterns, constant criticism, unmet needs, and unforgiveness can erode the foundation of the relationship if not addressed early. Many marriages break down due to trivial issues!

It is the same in a believer's walk with Jesus!

The 'little foxes' are minor temptations, distractions, or negative habits that, if left unchecked, can cause significant damage in a believer's life. The bad habits or worldly distractions that hinder spiritual growth and intimacy with God should be addressed early so that they do not hinder our spiritual growth and Christian walk in the long run. If they are left unchecked, suddenly, one day we will find ourselves far away from the way of the Cross!

My friend, we are the bride of Christ. Do not let the world or its attractions take you away from Jesus. Paul was able to declare, "For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39). And there lies our lesson today!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to consciously stay close to You and not let the little foxes destroy my love for You. Help me, Lord. Amen.
